GETTING STARTED IN GTS CHALLENGE |
|
Membership and Profile: First, you need to become a member of NASA; you can apply and pay for this online. Here you will be required to fill in vital information about yourself, contacts, your car, your class, your car number, your sponsors etc. This information is vital to the Local Region (when you register for an event, this information is forwarded to the region you will race with upon registration), it has to be up to date an accurate. Note: some regions will have a list of competitors and numbers that are already spoken for, a little research may be beneficial in the long run. License and Medical: If you do not currently hold a NASA Competition License, you must have one. (Some Regions may allow you to compete for a one race weekend introduction to NASA utilizing a current SCCA, BMWCCA, PCA or EMRA license, see item three) Direct yourself to the NASA National website forms page and download the form pages that you will need. All race drivers must have a Medical Evaluation to compete in NASA (and any organization). Download that form and see your doctor to have it completed. Have these items completed well before your first event to avoid causing headaches. If you have a current Medical Evaluation from any of the above mentioned series, a copy may be sent with your Comp. License application. One Time Waiver: If you are a current license holder, you need to contact the NASA Region Director for opinion on the one race weekend waiver mentioned above. Links to each regions website can be found at the National website or in our region schedule area. There you will be able to find the email address of the NASA Region Director. NASA Regulations: PLEASE, to race in any organization, you must know that Organization’s rules. Once again, from the National website, download your version of the NASA CCR rules and at the minimum, familiarize yourself with the safety and technical rules. Safety and Tech: Pay close attention to personal safety gear. Make sure your equipment meets the required standards listed in the CCR, no tears, holes etc. in materials. NASA now requires Head and Neck Restraint systems, be sure yours is an accepted device. NASA also requires a race seat with HALO protection or a right side quick release safety net. GTS Rules: READ the GTS Challenge Rules. A must. Race Registration: Register for the event you wish to race at. You do this at the National website, click on Registration, then choose proper Region, then choose Race Event. You will be prompted to select your class etc. You pay with your credit card after all information is entered. NASA Refund Policy: Go ahead, make your plans early, register early, this makes the entire process so much easier and it is one less item to cross off your "Race Week List" at the last minute. Keep in mind, NASA has a very solid refund policy. Full refund less $30.00 processing fee provided that you notify your NASA Region Director within 5 days following the missed event. No partial refunds allowed. This policy does not apply to special events. Once the car hits the track all fees are non refundable. If you have any questions, email your NASA Regional Director. Annual Inspection: Each year, your car will need a NASA Annual Inspection where a logbook (if you do not have a NASA logbook) will be issued before you take part in the NASA weekend. (You may be able to utilize your “other” organization’s Logbook if you are racing under the above mentioned waiver, but your car will still need inspected). Most Regions will be capable of issuing an inspection and Logbook at the beginning of a weekend event, but you will need to contact the Region Director and make certain when and where this inspection will take place. Some regions will have listed on their websites accredited NASA Annual Inspection facilities, where you can have your car inspected (and make needed changes!) prior to your first event. Doing this would certainly make your Race weekend less hectic, we recommend this. Download the NASA Race Car Annual Inspection GUIDE. This is only a guide and will inform you of what items may be inspected on your car. Pay close attention to Roll Cage criteria! Dynamometer Certification: GTS requires you to be responsible for the proper classification of your car. As you should understand by now, GTS classifies cars by Power to Weight parameters. Because of this absolute rule, you must have a RWHP Dynamometer Certification performed. You must have your race car run on a chassis Dynamometer. Download the Form. Some Regions may have a Dynamometer present at the racetrack, but DO NOT COUNT ON THIS. Refer to the Approved Dynojet Facilities to find a facility near your location. If you do not certify, and there is no Dynamometer available at the track, you will be allowed to race in GTS, however, you will be classified as GTS/U (Unclassified) and race for no points or trophy that weekend. (Note: Make a copy of your certification and Dynamometer Graph for your records) (FORM) At Track Registration: All NASA Regions require that you turn in the required Race Car Technical Form. This form is also available at the National Site and must be filled out and signed by the driver. Regions may differ in their At Track Registration methods, but generally, whatever method is utilized, you will need to turn this form in when you present your Logbook. You will then be issued a Tech Sticker for your race car that has to be displayed in the correct location. Grid workers will not let youenter the track without the Tech sticker displayed. The exact method used is a good question to ask your GTS Series Director or NASA Region Director prior to arriving at track. Some regions assign this task to the GTS Series Director, while others maintain volunteer Registration personnel. Register with GTS Director: If you have a NEW Dynamometer Certification, present it with your Logbook, and Tech Sticker (Unless the GTS Series Director issues Tech Sticker) at the earliest possibly time to the GTS Series Director. The director will compute your absolute minimum weight based on these numbers. He will notate your logbook and authorize the information. He will also notate your RWHP and Minimum Weight on the Tech Sticker which will be used at impound. Absolutely never alter the numbers on the Tech Sticker. Track Ready: You are now ready for on track activity. Please understand there will be variations to the above mentioned list. Each Region, each GTS Director will operate slightly different. If you are prepared with most of the above information, everything will fall into place. We suggest you park near other GTS competitors. Ask Questions! There is no such thing as a stupid question. Seek information on location of scales; impound area, grid area, track ingress and egress, dyno location, trophy presentation etc. |
